back to school

there are thousands of teachers and students in america experiencing mixed feelings during this time of year. some children are excited to get back to school to see their friends and others dread the horrors of homework and physical education. some teachers are going through vacation withdrawal and counting the days until the holidays. others are glad to enter back into the "routine realm" as they thrive on schedules and grading papers. however, this return to learning experiences and disciplined lifestyles is not just for the teachers and students. i have realized that there is a time when everyone should get back to school.

let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance… proverbs 1:5

i am speaking about daily devotion; reading the Word of God. this is one of the many tools that help keep us sharp. how can we grow spiritually if we aren't feeding our hearts, minds and souls with His Word? i struggle with this just as much as you, but a few short weeks ago, someone dear to me shared something so simple yet profound. he reminded me that the book of proverbs has 31 chapters. That means 31 chapters for everyday of the month (give or take). God is awesome!! what a great assignment!!

so, why proverbs? to begin, the book of proverbs offers us the opportunity to gain moral skillfulness and mental discernment. it's literally basic training for our hearts, souls and minds. a proverb, itself, can be described as an object lesson based on or using some comparison or analogy. just a few short words can provide basic truth. proverbs draw a line between the foolish way and the wise way of doing things. and we are given the opportunity to choose the way which is best.

the book of proverbs, like the other 65 books of the bible, was divinely inspired by God. the Word of God is full of truth and love. proverbs is not just for the naïve or those who are easy to fool. we all can grow and learn from its teachings. don't we all need guidance and discernment in our daily walk? yes, Lord!! remember: no one is ever too old or too intelligent to learn.

racing to my classroom,
